wheel cleaner??

anyone know of any wheel cleaner that goes good with the gen 2 rims that gives it some shine?

PapaSmurf 08-02-2010 07:37 AM

Ive had the most success with the Eagle One A2Z Foaming product, it really does break the break dust/grim off your wheels, most of it comes off when you just spray the foam off. You can then go over them with soap and water and they look all shiney.

The only down fall is you go through the can pretty quickly, I think i cleaned each rim twice before I had to get a new bottle. So one bottle lasts about 2 washes for each rim.

heres a link to the product

Been using Sonax Wheel cleaner for a month now and love it. Autogeek sells it as well as Detailers Domain.

Autoglym... Comes with a nice warning not to leave on your wheels for longer then a minute lol. Really gets rid of the brake dust that I had caked on... I have black wheels which I thought were a mat finish... After using Autoglym on them I soon realized they had a shine to them originally lol....

The brake dust was REALLY caked on...

I use the mother's foam all wheel and tire cleaner. I don't have a 2nd gen speed or the stock rims on, but my summer rims were super dirty and I had tried washing with other products and it didn't help as much as I would have liked. I tried this stuff after seeing an add and it worked great. Haha the funny part is, the ad I saw for this product was being used on a 2nd gen speed3. I don't know if it will add "shine" but it will definetly help make them look brand new again (unless you have curbed or scratched your wheels already).

I used the Mother's stuff and it works alright. The ads show a lot more of the dust sheeting off than what really happens in real life. I had to follow the front wheels up with a good scrubbing with the wash sponge afterwards, so the "spray off" is kind of misleading. The bottle lasts about as long as Micablue's description of the Eagle product. I got one wash of all four wheels out of about 5/8 of the bottle.

Some Mazda exec is on the TV ad for the Mothers stuff, so I think there's some kind of co-sponsorship thing happening. Truth be told, that's why I grabbed this stuff instead of the others.

Good ole soap and water with some elbow grease

I wouldn't be suprised if there was better stuff out there, I was just saying it worked well for me. You are right about how quick the bottle goes though. You might get 2 washes (all 4 wheels) with it, well that's about what I got with a bottle.

I use the Eagle One A2Z wheel cleaner on every car I own. It cleans really good and I use it on my exhaust tips too, cleans them up real good and leaves a good shine to them.

just piss on it, that will work.

EvilMonkey 11-08-2010 09:43 AM

I normaly use car wash and a soft brush or mitt. I had bad brake dust and used Bleche White. I sprayed it on in near the lugs and harder areas to reach. Let it sit for 2 seconds, sprayed off and all the crap came right off. I wouldn't leave the stuff on there for longer than that though. Good stuff.

novice_01 11-08-2010 02:04 PM

I used Black Magic no scrub wheel cleaner and it worked pretty well. Just hosed it after aplication and about one week old brake dust came off.

This poster knows what he is talking about!!! Also if you use it with the paint sealant that comes in a $45/ piece kit your laughing and it will last you a long time, well everything but the rim cleaner which is good for at least 3-4mth doing all 4 rims and exhaust tips.

I would imagine you can't buy this brush with foodstamps? :)

ahskeetz 11-22-2010 03:36 PM

I recommend using some sort of wheel protectant to keep the dust off after cleaning. I use eagle one for both the cleaner and the protectant, works quite well.

Todd H 11-22-2010 03:37 PM

If you wash your wheels frequently then all you need is car soap.

Remember that the wheels are painted and clearcoated just like the rest of your car. Only use a wheel cleaner IF you cannot get the brake dust off with soap and water. In this case stick with something that near pH neutral. Stong all-purpose cleaners and bleach solutions (like Bleache-White) may work good for occassional use but you could damage the clear coat if you apply them on a wheel that is still hot OR if you let them sit too long.

After you clean your wheels apply a high quality paint sealant. Don't use a carnauba wax as it will burn off (due to the heat) very quickly. Once you seal your wheels (do inside and out) usually a strong stream of water is all that is needed to clean them.

For cleaning the inside (barrels) of the wheels I would use Wheel Woolies. I have used all of the brushes on the market, and while they do a good job, the stem tends to break, and you get break dust splatter like crazy. I would never use a wheel brush to clean the paint of my car because I would be afraid of causing micro-scratches and swirl marks, the same reason I no longer use them on wheels (since it is often the same or very similar paint systems used on them).
