MSF Advanced Search - Or hit the search button within the current section you are in
This forum is made up of many subforums. Pay close attention to what section you are in. And get acquainted with using the search feature. There are tons of threads that may have likely already answered your question. So before creating a new thread, spend a few minutes searching the forum for threads related to the topic you're interested in. The search function filters out common words such as "the, as, how, much, does", etc. You can try using quotes to search for three letter words. ex: "CAI", "FMM", "CBE", etc. Alternatively, adding asterisks before and after some three letter words will net you results and is called a wildcard search. Unfortunately, it is hit or miss. Example: *rmm*

There are also STICKYS at the top of every section. Please read these. They often contain forum-specific FAQs, or critical information for the MSF community. I suggest looking through these before posting a new topic. They have loads of information deemed important enough for everyone to see above all other threads, be it over-discussed topics, huge news, platform breakthroughs or anything else. So read them and learn.

There are forums for each generation of Mazdaspeed vehicle and their own respective subforums, so please, pay close attention to the section you are in. If you post a thread about MS6 suspension components in the MX-5 Forced Induction section, you're not going to get the response you seek, and you'll get flamed.

TIPS/REMINDERS
** Always let your car fully warm up before letting it get into boost (when you feel the turbo kick in). About midway on the temp gauge is where the needle should be for Gen1 MS3 and MS6 vehicles. 2010-2011 MS3 vehicles have no way of monitoring temperature other than by OBD data streaming (covered below). In 2012-2013 MS3 vehicles, about 10 minutes after the blue “cold temperature” light turns off is probably sufficient. If it's colder out, wait longer. As these are performance vehicles designed to stay cool, they may take 30 minutes to fully warm up in cold weather.
** Stay out of boost until at least 3000RPM. Read below under "Boost Gauge" for more information.
** MS6 owners: If you even need to tow your car: ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU USE A FLATBED, NOT A REGULAR TOW!! The car is AWD and anything other than a flatbed could cause major damage.
** Perform a compression test to verify the health of your engine prior to ANY power modifications!

BASIC MAINTENANCE

Gas
Be sure to run 93/91 octane, or the highest available. If you accidentally fill your car up with “regular” or other low octane gas, the car will be OK, but do not go into boost or otherwise drive spiritedly on that tank of gas.

Oil Changes
There are many opinions when it comes to oil. The recommended oil according to Mazda is 5W-30 synthetic. Many on here also use 5W-40 synthetic. If you want to read more, here is THE oil thread to consult.

Checking/Changing your fluids
Refer to the following thread (especially MS6 owners): MS6 Fluid Notes & DIY Pictures

The MS3 uses the same fluids as the MS6. The only exception is that Gen2 (2010+) MS3’s specify 75W-80 transmission fluid as opposed to the 75W-90 weight used in MS6 and Gen1 MS3 vehicles. For all Mazdaspeed DISI vehicles, make sure you use GL4 fluid, not GL5.

FL22 coolant can be purchased from Mazda. Zerex “Asian Vehicle”, Toyota pink, and Honda blue are also compatible.

** My windows won't go down automatically and/or I can't control them from the driver's door??!
This happens after the battery is disconnected.

MS6: Simply roll down EACH window a bit, then back up, holding the button "up" until you hear a couple clicks. ALL SET!
Gen2 MS3: Pull the switch up and let the window seat. Continue holding for 10 seconds or until a faint click is heard. Repeat for the “down” direction.

** Alignment! You will want to get your alignment checked out ASAP. Mazda's specs have a HUGE range, and are set for a very aggressive stance, which leads to severe uneven tire wear. So you are looking for more a more even alignment, giving even tire wear. Mazda also released a TSB for the MS6 a good while back for a revised front passenger control arm that corrected uneven caster that resulted in the car pulling to the right. Call your local Mazdaspeed dealer and ask if your car aqualifies for it.

** 2006 Clutch pedal adjustment - (does not apply to some later 2006’s and ALL 2007’s)
If you notice your clutch petal is hard to press down, or is too annoying to operate, you can do two things:
1. Take it to Mazda and beg them to do the “Clutch TSB”, which means they will change out the entire clutch completely under warranty

** Dirty Intake Valves - One of the biggest problems with engines using direct injection is the inevitable buildup of carbon deposits on the intake valves. If you have reached the point where your idle is rough or it feels like the car has a cam in it (usually 40k+ miles on a stock car), the intake valves are dirty and need to be cleaned. This mainly affects low-end power. Refer to this DIY on how to clean your valves

** Injector Seals – The stock injector seals are of an extremely poor design that is especially prone to failure above 300 wtq, however, they are known to fail on completely stock cars and symptoms are hard to nail down because the problem generally only appears at very high cylinder pressures where it can show up as knock.

** Smoking Turbo - (smoke is coming out of your exhaust pipe when you are sitting idle for 5-10min+)
You might or might not experience this.
Do an oil change, changing to 5W-40 rather than 5W-30. The thicker viscosity will help prevent the oil from seeping past the seals.

**THE ONLY PERMANENT SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS TO REPLACE THE TURBO**

** CEL/MIL/DTC Codes – A persistent check engine light means that the ECU has self-diagnosed a problem in your vehicle (a flashing check engine light that goes away means the ECU has detected a severe misfire which does not indicate a DTC is set). You must use a code reader/scan tool to access this code. If you don’t have a Cobb AP or other tuning utility, a relatively inexpensive modern option is to obtain an ELM327 bluetooth obd adapter (I personally recommend the low profile/”super mini” version) and use a phone app (eg, Torque for Android). Once you have the code, go to the following link to look it up. To understand why you're throwing the code, you'll have to do some research. Mazda OBD-II Trouble Codes

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES - You want to make your Mazdaspeed last longer...

Boost gauge
Boost gauges are standard on the Gen2 MS3, but not on the Gen1 MS3 or MS6. Generally speaking, it is preferable to monitor boost using a scantool or tuning utility like a Cobb AP rather than splicing into the factory vacuum tubing and adding another potential point of failure, however, having one is better than not having one. You will want to try and stay out of boost under 3000 RPM, and avoid it altogether in 6th gear. Boosting at low RPM's in these cars puts a very high strain on the engine because torque is high and engine speed and oil pressure are relatively low. Refer to the “How To” sections above for the MS3 and MS6 for details on the install.

Scan Tool
There are several of them out there. ELM327, DashHawk, DashDaq, ScanGauge, Ultragauge, etc. Highly recommended to purchase one to be able to monitor engine parameters, check & clear CELs, and have some fun with performance times. These also provide datalogging capabilities that are necessary for tuning. Some tuning devices also have datalogging & diagnostic tools in them so simply do some research to see what will be best for your plans.

Oil Catch Can (OCC) System
An oil catch can adds an additional oil/air separator to the PCV system. The oil and unclean vapors that once contaminated the intake tract are captured by the catch can. The primary advantage is that the intake valves will stay cleaner. It also helps avoid octane reduction and therefore knock due to oil vapors. There are many OCCs out there. If you pick one up you'll want one with an inlet & outlet of 5/8".

Turbo Timer
This is a matter of opinion, but generally speaking, turbo timers are not necessary with modern water cooled turbochargers. The owner’s manual recommends letting the car idle for one minute before shutting down the car if you’ve been driving spiritedly, however, I find that I am not often going WOT when looking for a parking space, therefore, I do not follow this practice. Turbo timers involve bypassing the factory security system, and they add another point of potential electrical failure.

PERFORMANCE MODIFICATIONS
Now you want to start getting some more power out of the DISI motor?? These are just some basic mods to get you started, research/search when you get to learn the car. Generally, the first three mods most Mazdaspeed owners install are, in this order: RMM, Cobb AP, and HPFP internals. Read on for more on these items.

NOTE: Most items under “FIXES” are recommended before you start POWER modding!

Motor Mounts: - One of the first mods to be done. The factory RMM has a particularly high failure rate on the MS3 and should be replaced immediately if present.

E85 – Our platform does not officially support E85, however, extensive experimentation has been performed by some seriously dedicated and awesome people on this forum. Generally speaking, our cars can tolerate up to a 1:3 mix of E85:E10 or E85:Gasoline with a low risk of problems, while gaining a huge amount of performance. Using more E85 will increase your risk of losing fuel pressure due to buildup of precipitates in our HPFP due to its design which inherently involves an interface, however small, of gas and oil. Further information can be found in this forum (read the stickies).

Methanol or Water-Methanol Injection (WMI)
Methanol or Water-Methanol injection is a way of both increasing the effective octane rating of the fuel under combustion, and of adding auxiliary/additional fueling to your Mazdaspeed. There are many different ways of implementing it, but most consider it to be one of the best performance-per-dollar mods on the Mazdaspeed platform. There are dedicated subforums in the Gen1 and Gen2 forums where you can read more. Unfortunately, there’s no knowledgebase article for this topic right now.

You might also want to add PMM -Passenger Motor Mount, and TMM -Transmission Motor Mount what with Jamie selling millions of these now.

I haven't! lol. It's still a work in progress. I'm an MS6 guy so that's where most of my knowledge is catered to/from obviously but I'll add as much MS3 info as possible as I find it & as it's sent my way to update/add to the thread.

As far as the TSB thread, I only found one of the MS6. There wasn't one made up for the MS3s.

Rhoadbloack, whether the guys that read this thread use it, or you want to add it to your search portion of the write-up,

adding asterisks before and after some three letter words will net you results and is called a wildcard search.

The FAQ needed to be updated, as it had been 9 months and no updating. I felt it best that since you had not posted in those 9 months, we get someone to combine elements of your thread, and update with more information.

Thank you very much for this thread. It's become my go-to source for accronyms. At your convenience, could you please add the following: BAT - Boost Air Temperature, IAT - Intake Air Temperature, and MAFS - Mass Air Flow Sensor?

I just spent a frustrating 30 minutes searching for a definition for "BAT".
