Default Disi rods vs ecoboost rods

I have been do some heavy reseacrh on the new ecoboost 2.0 that in the new ford
focusST here is some picture of the ECOBOOST piston rods and compared it with are DISI rod.
Now looking at ecoboost not sure how much boost it a hold up to vs DISI rods which we all know to hold up to 21psi
Ecoboost rod is lighter then are DISI and skinner too.
Here is a picture of both of the rods together.

Well they are both powder forged bullshit. Looks like they are using a different mixture of metal on the eb rod though. I bet its stronger than the disi rod with a more dense metal makeup.

The small end taper is there for reducing friction losses on the non loaded side of the bearing. Can you take measurements of the thickness in both planes? The actual cross sectional area of the beam might be similar since the EB rod looks thicker along one axis and thinner along another.

It also looks like they are using cracked caps on the big end - the metallurgy is probably different in the EB rod. Without knowing anything about the metallurgy in the EB rod we can't assume much of anything.

How many of these rods do you have and are you able to send one out my way? Send me a PM.

Here are some more pictures. Just by look at the rod cap EB look like one solid rod. I know the gen2 rod caps are broken off just like the EB rod.

Mahle makes the pistons and I'm not sure if it's them or Manley that makes the rods. Also on svt builds for out sources hardware to arp and one other company.

yeah I seen that just found the info on the rods here is the link
some good info sound like it good to up to 479 lb·ft TQ

These rods do seem to be similar in design to the article above - if Mahle is indeed behind them it is good to know that they used the 46MnVS6 material. The wrist pin bushing does seem to employ their oiling design principles (notice no oiling holes in the small end). Also note that they are thicker than our rods in the plane parallel to engine rotation.

That being said, the 3.6L V6 from Chrysler makes only 260 ft lbs, not 479 - they made a mistake there. The rods can't be directly compared as that is a different application.

The take-away number there is 1.2. Essentially that tells you how much above spec OEM rods are tested to. That is 1.2x above peak loads but remember that peak loads on a rod does not mean a 1:1 relationship to peak engine torque. You can increase torque at a higher rate than increasing peak force on the rod.

A total shot from the hip is that these rods are lighter and a better design than the DISI but the overall strength is fairly similar and they are safe (long term) when increasing torque by 1.3-1.5x above stock.
