I have a good feeling we can squeeze some more power out of the new engine vs stock block before I have to go alt fueling. I'm very excited to have a good healthy longblock that I can push w/out fear of zzb. |

1 Attachment(s) To any of my fellow StarWars fans. May the 4th be with you! |
6 Attachment(s) Recieved some pics of my build from Pablo at SP63 *drool* Just waiting on my valve buckets to finish this up. |
I got the phone call from Pablo and the motor's on the way! Should either be here this Friday or next Monday. I would like to give a big shout out to the guys at @SPEEDPERF6RMANC3; I'm super excited to get this bad boy in and have @Lex; get her tuned up! |
1 Attachment(s) Hmmmmm, what could this be? |

Keep your trunk and back seats clean, you will have to recover your balls from there from time to time. Good luck! |
Thanks! I'm hoping to be able to swap motors in the next couple of weeks. Myself and 2 friends need to coordinate scheduals where all 3 of us have a weekend off. |
1 Attachment(s) Motor is at a friend's house and she looks good. Swap will be going down this friday and hopefully finished and broken in some by sunday. I can't wait! |
Should be a great setup. The GTX3071 on a built motor is a very capable setup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCKTfbtpXj8 |
Hopefully everything i need shows up tomorrow. Waiting on a valve cover gasket, water pump, and thermostat. This has me nervous as hell because the tear down starts tomorrow afternoon. |
Friday night went smoothly. Saturday... was a bit different. It started off good, but we made the mistake of thinking we could pull just the motor... wrong -_- had a hell of a time getting thr trans mounted back to the motor. then fought for around 3 hours to get the driver's axle out of the transmission. Sunday, not so bad at the beggining. Had a battle removing the fuel rail, since it has never been removed in the 105,000 miles I have owned the car. Then we couldn't get the pilot bearing out from the old motor so i had to hit up a parts store, just to find out what the have for an MS3 it totally wrong. So i went back up to them and they looked up one for an MS6 and it was the one we needed... wtf lol Then I found out that the info I was told about the new motor having an external oil filter was totally wrong. In fact, it didn't have an oil filter housing at all. So i transfered mine over then had to go to the store to swap out oil filters so I had the correct ones. We finally got the motor in, and started routing electronics... but then just threw in the towel due to frustration/exhaustion/and just plain sick of slipping and slidding all over the ground due to all the fluids. Hopefully we will have her up and running either today or tomorrow. I'll post pics when I have time. |
Tomorrow should be the end of this journy and the beginning of the break in period. Just need to change oil filter, put in break in oil, put on front support and crossmember, hook up radiator/ac/some plugs, fill with coolant, put on fmic/headlights/bumper... and that should be it! Oh, and rear sway bar if we have the energy lol. |
Good news: She runs! And sounds good and healthy. =D Bad news: We think the cluch slave cylinder is bad because I can't get into gear. -_- To the parts store... tomorrow. Because I'm exhausted, nasty dirty, and hungry... and they're closed anyways lol |
Okay. So no parts store around me carries a slave cylinder. I had to order 1 from Mazda themselves. I won't have it until Friday, so it will be Saturday when I get a change to change it out. @Lex; I found out another reason why we couldn't push my car's potential. Not only did cylinder 3 have lower compression, the injector seal was bad as well. And cylinder 2's injector seal was on it's way out as well. So after i get things all figured out and she's 100%, we can really see what she can do with a nice healthy motor. |

Mainly two things: 1. a lot of brown/black gunk because of the extended use of rotella; 2. considering how fast he was going through oil and the low compression only on #3 , cracked ringlands on that piston; ...and 3., possibly but not necessarily light scratches on the main bearings and on the inside of the oil pump from the tiny bits that flew from the cracked piston. |
All I did was take pics of the head after i took the valver cover, and intake/exhaust manifolds off. I didn't want to pull anything apart due to it being my core. But I am sure Pablo will let me know how it looks when he opens her up for inspection. The head actually looked really good, no gunk at all. When I have the time, I will be posting up pics as well as my 1st start up video. |
The slace cylinder wasn't the culprit, but i'; happy i replaced it. When we removed the og to inspect it, it literally fell apart and had crud in it. We believe the clutch was installed backwards. A lot of my friends showed up when we were doing the parts swap over from core to built LB, and they decided to pick up my clutch to look at it and i'm sure they didn't put it back the same way they found it. Anyways, stock clutch is old and tired and i am not dropping the trans again just to flip it around. So i ordered an South Bend stg3 endurance clutch kit with an new oem throw out bearing. |
SHE RUNS AND DRIVES!!!!!! I can't wait to break her in so I can re tune her into a beast =D The stock clutch was installed correctly but I guess it gave up the ghost when we transferred it to the new block. I will have pics and a video when I get a chance. |

It is! 2 weeks without my car was pure torment. After the test drive, I had an uncontrollable stupid smile on my face lol. It feels amazing to have my baby back. Put 30 miles on her last night, 970 to go before I can really open her up and get you a datalog to see if there's room for improvement on my current tune with you. |
My cleaned injectors came in from SP63 and I will hopefully have some time during the weekend to install them. I already put 100 miles on the new block and an did oil change. Oil was nice and clean. Got an CEL for the crank positioner sensor, due to us not timing it during install. Hopefully we resolved that issue today, I already noticed it's smoother and I can take off in 2nd gear from a roll again without it bucking. While underneath, we realized the the bolts for the oil pan were not all the way tightened, so we did that as well. And I need to pull off the oil filter housing during my next oil change at 300 miles to put some permatex on the gasket because it has a minor leak. Besides those minor issues, the motor is running great so far. |
1 Attachment(s) Quick update. I'm hitting 23lbs with zero issues! On the way to the gym, I eased her into boost. 1st 12lbs, then 16lbs, finally 21lbs. On the way home, I eased her into 21lbs then cracked her wide open and held 23lbs... fuuuuuuck I missed the sound of my open wastegate *drool* Tomorrow, the injector swap, and hopefully I can do a datalog for @Lex; to see if we can make more power. |
1 Attachment(s) Looks like I lost about 60whp. I can understand, since I did have bowl work done on the valve ports and the intake/exhaust ports had a mild porting as well. Then the face of the SP63 custom pistons are a completely different design from the Gen1 stockers. So I am guessing I will be in need of a touch up tune in my future. I sent @Lex; some datalogs to review. That way I can have his professional opinion on the matter. Here is an VD graph just to show how they differ. Red and blue are the 2 logs I recently taken with my SP63 longblock. Green is a log I took when I had the stock block. |
Are those runs repeatable and Vdyno setup correctly (tire size, weight, temperature)? 60whp is excessive to "lose" with the new motor and I am curious if there are any other variables at play. I replied to your email. |
I did both runs back to back after I did the 2-3-4 wot datalog. In fact, those 2 runs were the 4th gear WOT logs i sent you. Same exact dyno set up as the run I had on file with the stock block. |
