I relocated my XLE BPV in prep for 5th port, and my fears were correct, COBB says the XLE can function as a BOV, but they lie. You just can't get enough preload on it to keep it closed at idle.

I just spent $70 on a samco superflex hose to recirculate from its current position, that money could have put me that much closer to a GA instead. What is the timeline on this?

Zigatapatalka

Release of the feature likely next week.

I don't care about being a ricer...nor do I hate the ricers...but even in recirc if my chit is leaking boost I don't want that...so please allow the early GA adopters to get the updated FW.

I run blue 2 shims....hahahah.....anything more than that an I get surge.

help me pls :)

LOL @ blue 2 shims.

I wish I had a dollar for every time somebody used this as a response to a stupid question.

I'd be filthy rich.

The BPV is kept closed at idle and low load with this feature - under boost you will have the same situation as with a normally functioning BPV.

The Forge I just tested worked best with blue - 2 shims :)

I just finished up a custom FMIC with treadstone tr-8 and had to run the oem bpv vta because i had no hose for recirc. I love the sound, but hate the pops and back fires, the 9.xx afr at idle and the bucking at part throttle low speed.

@Lex I've been following this thread from the begining without interest in vta but rather the boost protection. ( i hate the brick wall effect of fuel cut) but with this current serving of rice i want more.

So, does your device only help with the rich idle condition? What about the richness in between shifts and the pops and backfires? My car seems to recover from its rich condition by going lean for a moment as shown in the log below. This log is lift shifted at about 5k. The just getting on it kinda driving not WOT FFS.

I'm targeting 11.4afrs. CL exit @ 1.0 20psi taper to 17psi. This is the same map i was using with TMIC so i've not got to tuning it just yet. But other than idle, ltft's are spot on.

Lex 06-25-2012 09:27 PM

The device helps between shifts as well. As you get off the throttle, the device will close the valve since keeping it open while you're in vacuum and driving will cause the same rich situation as at idle. So I've done some fine tuning such that the device will allow as little air as possible to escape before closing the BPV between shifts while also keeping things surge free (right on the edge of it). This resulted in the smoothest results and shifts. I do get a pop here and there, mostly at partial throttle but it happens 1-2 times during an entire drive.

I drove with the OEM BPV in VTA without the GA and it was terrible in terms of hesitation after a shift and gas economy. I can't imagine doing that with the OEM BPV, without the GA it leaks all the time unless you're in boost.

EDIT: I should mention - the OEM BPV is a diaphragm type. If it breaks or starts to leak, it will start to close on its own more and more. This is bad because it will also leak under boost. My BPV holds vacuum perfectly from the top port and this is a good test for the BPV itself. If it doesn't hold vacuum, it will leak under boost and it will improve how running it VTA feels since it will close under vacuum.

Mistersix 06-26-2012 05:48 AM

Ya it sits open about a 1/4" when at idle. And yes it sucks to drive. I've always like the stock valve. Mine has always worked great and it sound decent to.

I have noticed that it sounds like it stays open for a long time. Say you rev the engine to get it to go woosh, it doesn't just go:
Psssh!
It goes:
Psssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhh!
In a near comical fashion.

So the GA closes the valve after a shift before your back on the gas and the valve closes itself under vacuum/boost? As if to eliminate the lazyness of the oem valve? Interesting.

I'm curious to see you test more valves with this and develop it further. I'm sold on it for the over boost protection already. I'm currently over boosting because haven't tuned my new set up.

Will this new feature be adjustable?

I have already tested non OEM valves and they work better than OEM in VTA ... simply because of how fast and stiff the OEM is. The OEM is worlds better than without the GA in VTA but others are even better. The OEM also has twin chambers making it like I said a very fast and unique valve.

The feature is not adjustable - it's just an add on to the failsafe device. You will be able to turn it on and off however.

So if I use the feature with say a TS BOV and then turn it off when I drop in a Forge V2 BPV, will I need to make any adjustments to my tune?

BlueDmnSpeed 06-26-2012 01:23 PM

i need something to plug the recirc part of my Cobb TIP so i can do this. i have the HKS SSQV3 and want to do this. who knows maybe it'll fix my too lean after cat CEL lol

m249saw 06-26-2012 02:45 PM

I think @eric@edgeautosport has something. Billet recirc plug

If you run any of those valves (TS or Forge) in VTA you should have this feature enabled. If you recirculate them, you can disable it.

LOL, so the answer is I can run VTA with this feature on and Recirc with the feature off and I don't need to adjust my tune? :naughty:

So will you just have a Red Toggle switch that has a label of a bowl of rice on all of the NEW GA's?

No, it will be smarter than that. The change is software only.

Not quite, my plan is to have final software release by the end of this week. I will post announcement here.

Dmurray06 06-26-2012 06:31 PM

I wantz some rice

Mistersix 06-26-2012 08:49 PM

Awesomeness!!! I want one. I'm loving the sound of my OEM VTA but the car sucks to drive.

I've never had VTA before and that big woosh of air in between shifts completes the experience of driving a turbocharged car, rice or not.

What valve was that in that video? Forge? Which one?

I assume we have to send the units back to get its firmware update, but can we disable/enable this VTA feature ourselves?

dantes5823 06-26-2012 09:43 PM

Damn that sounds nice in vta. Should gotten an in car clip. In before forges get all bought up.

Yes and yes. The firmware update for existing customers will need to be done by me so the units will have to come in. For you it's nice and easy since you're local :) The feature the user will be able to disable and enable themselves as they wish once the firmware is updated.

With my camera all you hear in-car is the exhaust rumble - I tried. Also as it's noted in the captions, the GA works with ANY of the push type BPVs in VTA. It doesn't have to be a Forge. Actually the Turbosmart I tested as well was a little smoother of a valve.
