Why not wait for the 2.3 Ford block coming out?

To add to what phate said: I wasn't told the material composition, just that they were made from a "higher-grade material than their normal pistons".

The price for them in my parts list is the retail price from PositiveFabrications.

Also, I went ahead and bought a new oil pump. My original one seemed fine, but after cleaning all the metal bits out of my oil pan I was concerned that some metal might have been sucked up into the pump when the engine blew.

No sense in risking a $4,000 engine blowing because I didn't want to spend $150-200 on a new oil pump.

1. Will the new block work with Mazda hard parts? Would we have to buy a new head, IM, EM, crank, pistons, etc?

2. Are their any 'upgrades' to the new block?

3. What's the price? With a membership to Mazdaspeed Motorsports, the price on a brand-new MZR bare block is only about $1400 shipped. Dirt cheap in my opinion.

It's our block iirc just like the 2.0t, just a different (better,) head. Not knocking the choice and the build will be great, but I could also see justification in waiting to see. I was just curious.

So $655 for the pistons.
The pistons you posted earlier have the wiseco logo on them. If wiseco is making them for this positivefab outfit then they are probably 2618 just like the standard, Gen2, and skyactive crown Wiseco pistons for the MZR DISI.

Yes $655.00 shipped is the price.

Yes they are outsourced through Wiseco

Yes they are made of 2618 alloy with the Armor glide coating and "xx" rings

So far I have only asked for the 22.5mm wrist pins, but I don't see why a 22mm wrist pin isn't possible. I will double check with Wiseco to make sure.

I would like to thank silvapain for his patience on these, it's been a longer road then expected and I hope he is as excited as I am. I will have a post up in our vendor section here in the next couple days with more some more info.

Still waiting on pistons. They should arrive at PositiveFabrications in the next day or two, then off they go to my machine shop.

I just bought transmission fluid and coolant yesterday. Another $200 gone. Fuck.

Status?

Think it'll be back together for the meat at Matt's parents' house next month, or is it too early to say?

I have been told that the pistons will arrive at the machine shop by the end of the week. If not, I get a free handjob.

If so, the machine shop will be done with my block sometime next week and I can start putting shit together. It will mostly depend on my work schedule at that point, but I could definitely have it done by Matt's install meat.

silvapain could let me know if your machinist has to bend the oil squirters for piston clearance? If he does I want to talk to Wiseco about getting that fixed.

I'm heading down to the machine shop Monday probably just to take a look. I'll see what they say.

I'll also take plenty of pictures of the assembled shortblock.

Block is done! Time to start putting shit together.

Balance shaft oil port tapped and plugged by the machine shop.

Oil squirters just BARELY hit the piston centers. Shop had to slightly bend them. @PositiveFabrications is going to talk to Wiseco about it.

Whole bottom end balanced. The machine shop had to do a lot of material removal it looks like. From both ends of the crank.

I'll post some of the clearance specs later.

Hmm once I beat the K04 Hp record, I just might buy a GT28 off somebody that recently acquired a new turbo, like maybe a GTX3071, and go for the GT28 Hp record.

My mad cock degree wheel:

When trying to time the engine, we discovered that the crank alignment pin wasn't locking the crank at TDC for piston 1; it was causing the crank to rotate. So we have to time the crank manually. Hence the degree wheel. Unfortunately, I don't have a wheel and no parts store has a degree wheel in stock, so we went to Hobby Lobby and made one.

Just keep moving up the line, from the gt28's and 30r's till you own every record.

Will elaborate later, but Mazda timing procedure is not very accurate...pic shows actual, degreed TDC versus Mazda timing pin TDC.

^ yes. It isn't. How the fuck can it be if the peg just sits against the surface of a crank counter weight. There should be a precision hole in the weight instead of just screwing it against the surface.

IMO one the reasons some people can run a lot more timing than others.

I agree.

On the crankshaft, there is a flat machined into the crank counterweight on the first counterweight of cyl 1 at TDC. The pin is supposed to be machined so it will push against the flat with a flat end, and it will line up. With silvapain's, though, we kept tightening the pin and the crank kept rotating. We bottomed out the pin, then did the same thing with the bolt. Neither would stop the crank at a specific point. We figure the flat was improperly machined.

SOO, we went on a journey for a degree wheel to do this right...I didn't suspect anyone had one, and we called a ton of places which confirmed they didn't have any, or didn't know wtf we were talking about. I suggest an arts & crafts store for something round to make one, and we end up at Hobby Lobby. Silvapain scored a sweet ass clock that we turned into a makeshift degree wheel, lolol.

We degreed it with the wheel and marked TDC. The picture above shows where the TDC pin bottomed out in the hole, but it was ~7° off from actual TDC. I agree this is probably one reason we see so much variance in timing curves. And it's all the more reason to stay conservative with street tuning.

Anyway, once we moved the crank to TDC, we put the bolt in to hold it. It was in just enough to kiss the crank and keep it from turning clockwise while we tightened the crank pulley bolt.

So how far along did you guys end up last night?

The ride home wasn't exactly comfortable, but I could still feel all of my extremities when I got home, so all-in-all not too bad...
