The reason why is that you won't have that much blow by one and that rings wont flutter around and piston slaping.
Back then they use to gap them .0030 -.0035

As for people who have custom piston its different for you guys. I don't know how many time do I have to tell use. Weisco won't tell you some if they did have the facts dude..

I agree that the vendor "should" have the facts but a rep at that vendor may not know WTF he is talking about...so that's why I want to get multiple "facts" to determine which is the real deal

The guy I talked to was flipping through pages and said "wait" a couple of times and then finally landed on .0025.

Just lemme know. I'm really in no hurry, and you'll only need the wheel and pin for a few minutes out of the whole engine build process. Getting the valve bucket clearance set is far more time consuming. I think we had to pull the cams 3 times to get all of silva's in check, lol. I did the gray 6's just as many times.

Yeah, it was three times. Dano, here's the valve clearance Excel spreadsheet Clint and I made when doing the bucket clearance. It's a good way to record where you're at and what buckets you need.

n00b question here but if you just pull the cams and head with zero head work is this necessary? I am beginning to think I may only need to replace the valve seals, which would solve my #1 cylinder intake valve issue.

I don't know. I recommend you measure valve clearance on your car before you pull the cams and head, and see if you're within spec. Theoretically, if you're fine then you will be fine when you put it all back together.

EDIT: If you're going to replace the seals, why not just have a machine shop check out and rebuild the whole head? It's a small price to pay for knowing that the valves, guides, seals, and seats are all good.

I wouldn't even chance it by not measuring. One of my valves was so far off I doubt it was ever in spec.

agreed. I indirectly know of two shops here one of which i wouldn't use and the other one is backed up for 4-6 weeks...lol

I am sure there are other around but...well I am not a very trusting person and just because a guy has a machine shop and says he can do the work doesn't mean chit in my book

now what I would consider doing is sending my head up to Phate's or your machine shop to have the head work done. Do you have a feel for their backlog?

edit: I will check the clearances before I pull my head along with leakdown tests on 3 of the 4 cylinders to check the seats. #3 is way too leaky to test the seats that way.

Clint and I use the same machine shop. Call Kirk at G&G Machine Shop 1-217-892-9696 and tell him Clint & Dan told you to call him.

haha chit takes time...

I don't currently have an oil pressure gauge and feel that is a must before building so I need to get that done and measure existing pressure to compare to afterward. Unfortunately, I don't take the easy way to any end. I want to measure turbo oil feed outlet pressure along with having the ability to restrict it and still measure block pressure.

This is where I am at so far and just found an inline 12mm to -4an restrictor [after the below image was created] and now need to find a restrictor banjo bolt or alter that part of the equation.

so it looks a lil something like this.



Still waiting to acquire the below items:

ARP 87.5mm ring compressor
all the fittings/lines outlined above
Prosport Halo gauges [boost, oil pressure, EGT]
rods [here on Monday]
Mazda OEM stuff [Monday]
line up machine shop time for head work

and about 99 other things I haven't thought of yet

hahaha

nah I'm not really patient at all but only want to do this once and have the car down as little as possible. If I didn't/don't need any machine work on the head this will be a 4-5 day affair and be done...hopefully...lol

if I need machine work the schedule is blown all to hell and it will be a month build.
