Is this becoming a problem? Blue streak lost his gt30 as well and I don't wanna lose mine. What's the cause ?

I couldn't tell you. Rather mysterious honestly. I haven't fiddled with anything mechanically or tune-wise on the car in months. Driving home I accelerate in 6th (at 80mph) and where it normally hits 10psi and I level off on the throttle it made 5psi, and the turbo sounded like a bad electric motor in a vacuum cleaner. After a few more miles it would make no boost.

No smoke while driving. I'd get a puff at a stop if I downshifted rather than coast in neutral and mostly use brakes.

Here's a brief video from last night. Wife 2nd day mailed it to ATP today [as a side note, HOLY FUCK shipping has gotten expensive! It was over $80 for 2nd day air, fuckin $200 for overnight. FUCKING INSANE!]

Been driving it 80 miles a day 5 days a week since September/October. Several thousand miles to say the least.

Okay. Test fit the no-name mani I got. I know I'll be able to clear that a/c line, but I want to wrap it in reflective tape or something. Anyone got a better idea? suggest something good? This any good?

Wrap the AC line in reflective tape or the manifold? I get some adhesive backed reflective tape to protect that plastic cowl.

not racebuilt.

I meant the a/c line. I'm wrapping the manifold with that thermo-tec copper coated header wrap (2000* stuff). My thoughts are just protecting the a/c line from the EWG which will be right there.

hum...so you used the OE oil feed line no added restrictor? IIRC that is the way you are supposed to install it and the way I did mine. I have about 20K on mine so far with negligible shaft play noted last month when I installed my JBR widepath.

AFAIK BB turbos are not worth rebuilding why send to ATP? is it still under warranty?

yes, still within 1 year warranty. Yep, installed with the OE feed line, no restrictor added. Didn't mess with it at all.

I don't like the reflective tape. If you have to wrap something, get the header wrap fabric. If you need to reflect heat from a panel, then get a sheet of DynaShield or similar (thicker and better quality than the tapes out there).

Mega failure on the highway.

Couldnt even get 1psi when it threw in the towel. The turbo also made a grinding noise while trying to spool and spewed a giant smoke screen out the tail pipe.

There was tons of shaft play (5+mm in every direction) and the compressor wheel hit the housing. I haven't had time to take pictures yet as I've spent most of my free time just getting the car back online so I can stop mooching the loaner car. Ha.

Jeez...mabe I will not get a GTX3076. @pavitol said all the russians running GTs failed and now these are all. But I mean other cars run them and dont seem to have problems. I dont want a $1600 turbo that isnt going to last. I would want to get at least 5+ years out of it.

You could be onto something with heat-shielding the oil feed. If oil was getting coked up in there it would be an excellent way to kill a turbo. I would inspect the line prior to putting a new turbo on.

not disagreeing but if that were happening all the K04s wouldn't last 6mos and there are K04s out there with 100k miles on them. Even if coking were not occurring until higher mileage.

question for chimmike and BlueStreak...did you guys happen to peal back or remove the OE shielding on the oil feed?

I made a point to ensure it extended all the way up to the fitting. it tries to slip/peal back.

I am thinking that they might not have been as careful with the insulative sleeve on the feed line, not that they need to add something else on top of it.

No sir. The heat shielding is still there. Maybe my ceramic coated SteedSpeed helped it along? I imagine there's alot of heat radiating from it.

I went back to the stock mani (pretty sure it flows better) and header wrapped it this time around.

The sleeve is a few inches back from the banjo where it bolts to the turbo. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps a turbo timer might be necessary with these turbos. Ball bearing is a bit more finicky than journal.

I've got to get some heat reflective tape for an a/c line, so I might throw some or a new/bigger sleeve on the oil feed, too. Can't hurt.

and yeah, I'll pull the feed line and probably clean it out good with seafoam/deep creep

SPEED6 KILLAH Haven't gotten everything put together yet, still in the disassembly phase. I've googled all over the place for a thin wall 16mm socket. I've got several here at the house that I'll try and if all else fails I'll have to overnight one next week.

You can use a chrome 16mm 12 point socket from craftsman....

Pablo, I bet if you set up a group buy for the head stud kit with the big nut you could unload a good many sets. The nut is pretty noticeably larger than what originally comes with the kit (I didn't see the original ones in the box though, just a pic from teh MZR god himself)

Tonight: finish removing the IM (one more bolt to loosen) then probably pop off the crank pulley, start removing the other pulleys and yank the timing cover. That'll just leave removing the cams/chain for tomorrow in order to pull the head.

btw...........that water line to the turbo....that thing must be the goddamn primary coolant source for the whole motor. I swear I've drained all the coolant outta the motor through that damn line.

Some more pics. Current status: VC off, IM off, crank pulley bolt out.

Next steps in some sort of order: pulleys removed, timing cover removed, timing chain/tensioner removed, cams removed with caps, probably remove all ancillary shit bolted to the head, head off, oil pan off, old pistons/rods out!

Yeah, I really wish my car was another color than silver, then I could've done a copper color.


here are some progress pics from this morning. Man, getting all the little shit outta the way takes longer than removing the head and oil pan. Thanks to jracer for coming by to help this morning!

One thing I noticed: our stock headgasket is MLS. Interesting. Makes me wonder if we need the cometic.

Oil pickup and balance shafts in place


Head removed! Cylinder hatching looks great! minor scuffs in the cylinders but the crosshatching is definitely there and in good shape. If I do anything I might take a scotchbrite pad to the cylinders, but I'm not going to de-glaze hone them because I really don't think it's necessary.


My finger is sitting on the notches in the pistons, which are on the front side of the cylinder........this is for reference when putting the new pistons in.

Balance shaft out! Oil feed out as well. It is plastic and pretty lightweight. Will blast it clean with deepcreep later.

Next steps: Install balance shaft delete kit, pull stock pistons/rods, plastigauge the crank journals, gap the rings, install new pistons/rods, port the intake and exhaust sides of the head (holy shit there's a lot of material in there that can be taken out), etc.
