Default The ATP Mazdaspeed Specific Exhaust Housing Info

Ok, so we have all heard ATP turbos have boost creep. over 5psi of boost creep, more if you stayed in the throttle.

I did a little work today to work on that. I pulled the turbo, to port the wastegate. after disconnecting the flapper, i moved it away to see what i was working with.

Im sorry I didnt take pictures, I had every intention to, but the camera died.

First thing i noticed was a thumbnail section of the wastegate opening being blocked. I had been told that there was plenty of material to grind away, but was shocked to see how much was actually blocked.

This is about what it looked like:

The wastegate opening is only about an inch or so, and that section was blocked, i could definately see why it creeps so badly.

I began porting the wastegate. I grinded away at that section until it was gone. it took quite of bit of time with the dremel.

After that section was gone, i proceeded to stretch the opening. I did not stretch it by too much, as i didnt want to risk the integrity of the seal.

I felt like i ported an extremely large amount of material away, so i cleaned it out, and put it back together.

heres where the bad news comes.

After my port, it still creeps. not neaarlly as much, but if the boost controller is at 14-15psi, it will hit 18-19 nearing 5500-6000rpms. now prior to this, it would hit 20+psi before 5000rpms if it was set to 14-15, so this did make a fair improvement.

I would very much like to NEVER pull the turbo out again.

Luckily, i didnt drain my oil this time, so it wont be a complete loss if i do find some time to pull it out again. It is becoming second nature to R&R the turbo.

This was a definate improvement. Not enough to go ahead with a tune. Im not sure if the amount of creep left can be tuned out. There is a small amount I could still stretch the wastegate opening, but i think in the end, a new manifold and EWG will be the fitting solution.

Sorry to inform those of you that are waiting to put these turbos in, I have heard of a few that have ported the housing, just have yet to put it all together, MAKE SURE you port it to the limit. you will still creep if you dont gut almost all of the available material out.

I bet if you raise the boost to 17psi though it won't creep.

Why 17 psi? Is that right in the sweet spot of the turbo and the waste gate's ability to control boost?

Thanks for taking the chance a doing this!
Couple questions:
1) Are you sure what you are experiencing is creep and not boost spikes? Not doubting you, just clarifying. It holds boost to the target and then slowly increases as you are wot?
2) Any chance you can get some pics if you take it off?
3) How does this port job compare to this one:

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/h...5/DSCF0238.jpg

The opening is completely round and there is absolutely no obstruction left.
Did yours look the same?

Again thank you for this.
Unfortunately because right now the ONLY option for exwg is expensive custom fabrication for both the 3 and 6, I want to be absolutely sure porting is not going to solve this issue.

I really wish people would stop buying these turbos...the wastegate is utter garbage and they are fucking EXPENSIVE!
You could literally have a full custom set up with ANY turbo you wanted, exwg and dp about the cost of the ATP kit.

Cherryspeed, i was hoping you'd see this. knowing you havent put it back in yet.

can i see yours from the downpipe side? and a shot of it from straight on at the manifold flange?

1) It surely is creep.
-The lower the boost, the less creep. the lower the load, the less creep (it wont creep with the ac off if the boost is set to 14psi.
-Im going to try to run higher boost level to see if it induces more creep.

2) I will surely take pics if i pull it again. Im not sure if that will happen or not. Depends on the results of some testing, logging, and how soon the steedspeed manifold will be out and how much i feel like spending on it :-P

3) I felt like I ported EVERY singly bit short of stretching the opening to the max. I wish I would have done so.

you are absolutely right. while they are working on the new exhaust housing, they should stop the sale of all turbos in the meantime.

I just did the same thing to my 35R before I installed it this past weekend and got no creep while I was out doing my test drives. My boost climbs to 16ish psi and stays there until redline

More boost = more creep.

Ive already decided that i shouldnt be running the stock manifold anymore, so as soon as one is available with an EWG port, ill be going that route.
