Default Clutch Failure at 5K

Has anyone seen/heard of issues with clutches failing? A guy I work with has a 2011 and had complete clutch failure this weekend at 5k miles. He is stock so it's not a power issue, I am not sure how much experience he has driving stick so it could have just been a complete driving fail. I haven't seen many threads about clutch failure except for the guys making a lot of power.

Sounds like a fluke. Physical failure means defect or the driver fucked up royally.

Odd, while the clutch in these things can be "touchy" to get used to, it is actually very strong. I bet it was drivers fail.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. Just wanted to bounce it off people that know a hell of a lot more than me.

Sounds like a WOT shift of 2-3 that got away from him, and landed in 1st.

Pilot error,FTL. Reminds me of when I lent my Vdub camper to my wifes unlce who knew how to drive a stick. I had to replace the clutch and 2,3 gears and syncros!

It took me 82k of tuned up, hole shots (thru 1&2) and all around driving like a jerk off to replace mine.

I'm a pretty shitty driver and I don't think even I could wreck a clutch under 5k.

5K is either an intentional kill, or mechanical failure.

for 1300$ I'd have to do that one myself and throw a new clutch in while I was in there. Or did they warranty it?

He got it back, Mazda said it was probably just a defective clutch.

All you guys automatically blame the Driver. Im pretty sure that even a idiot couldn't create a fail from improper driving.

Glad he got it done under warranty. I have been a bit paranoid since I missed a shift from 3-4 at redline (wot) with meth spraying and landed in 2nd gear at the drag strip.

Engine, clutch and trans seem to be doing fine though. But man I almost shit myself. Gave the car a good 30 minute cool down, made 2 more passes and proceeded to spank an E46 on the way home.
